Make BisonCam work on Windows Vista

by Nish Vamadevan on 02/06/2007 · View Comments

I had a problem installing the BisonCam Driver on my ASUS Laptop running Windows Vista, The XP driver didn’t work at all and I expected that…

This is how I got it working…

Download the driver in the following location and install it.

http://www.fnode.com/drivers/Bison_Camera_Vista32_NB.zip

Then you need to Reboot. Do NOT avoid to reboot because you are too lazy, otherwise it won’t work!

After that, you need to make some registry modifications. Easy way to do it is to copy the registry code into notepad and save it as a .reg file. After that, just double click the .reg file and apply the registry modification. (Copy the code in between Registry Info tag)

You can also download the .reg file Here.

The Cam might show the picture as upside down, All you got to do is a Verticle Flip, Its on the Option ==> Video Capture Filter ==> Rotation

Dan, what is the exact model number of your laptop? If it is Asus, they have a few updated Vista Drivers for their notebook range… Its worth checking their support page as well…

I have the same problem! The reg changes made it see the camera, but I’m upside down and the vertical flip option is not in the menu. Just has check boxes for “Vertical” “Horizontal” I tried checking them in all combinations and no affect. I don’t like hanging upside down like a bat, any help would be appreciated.

I use Advent 7076A upgraded to Vista Home Premium lite. I’ve done all suggestions above but still can’t get my BisonCam to start. After install as above, it keeps searching for hardware driver and returns a message that windows couldn’t install image device, insert CD provided by manufaturer! Pls help as I’m going mad without my webcam. Thanks all

Brian, there should be a Rotation Option and you need to do that.

Eagle 1, What kind of Camera does it have? Are you sure its Bison Cam?

Dear Nish: I’m not too sure the make of the webcam as I didn’t bother in my days of XP but I think it’s either bisoncap or novelcom. I can’t even find the manual again. Any help and suggestions will be highly appreciated please

I am having the same problem with the windows update version of the bisoncam, NB Pro driver…. Im actually rather pissed that microsoft would release an update for the cam without testing it first… anyways it causes msn to freeze and causes windows vista home Premium to crash… sadly enough the only webcam driver i can find that works… isnt for microsoft its for linux and its the m560x bisoncam driver off source forge. boots fine with slackware. I do hope microsoft actually reads these forums and corrects the driver they released in windows update. Its silly that my driver will work on slackware and not windows vista… anyways I have a ASUS A6J laptop running windows vista home premium upgrade.

Following are specs for my laptop’s chipset… maybe some devloper will take pitty on all of us and code a new driver lol

(THIS IS THE BISONCAM) NOTE 5602 that the microsoft update driver DOES NOT SUPPORT THIS DEVICE EVEN THOUGH WINDOWS UPDATE LIKES TO INSTALL IT AT 3AM and cause me grief because its to retarded to realize the driver doesnt work… nor does it bother to give an error message. JUST CASES MSN TO FREEZE!

Hi Nish,

I’m using a NEO EMPRIVA 540NVi notebook. It runs on Vista. The webcam appears to work fine when I open it using the BisonCam shortcut. However, when I open it through Yahoo Messenger, my image is upside down. All the options on the settings are not working. I’ve checked and unchecked the vertical and horizontal options, but the output remained upside down. Also, when I try the options using the BisonCam shortcut, checking the vertical option also did not change the orientation of the image output.

Hoping to get your help.

Thanks for the prompt repy. I already tried it before. Checking/unchecking the vertical/horizontal options did not effect a change on the inverted image.

Okey, I want you to try and use it with another software like MSN / Live Messenger… See whether it solves the problem…

Also, Have you tried reinstalling Yahoo! Messenger?

Are you sure its BisonCam? Make sure you indeed have BisonCam on your laptop… There is another one called OptiCam which most people get confused with BisonCam… Such mistakes causes problems like inverted images etc…

Hi Nish,

I tried reinstalling the Yahoo! Messenger. I still get the upside-down webcam output. I also downloaded and installed the MSN Live Messenger. The webcam output was also upside-down. I tried going through the camera settings (on the MSN messenger) but as soon as I click on the settings button, the MSN messenger shuts down.

This is really frustrating. Is it possible that the device installation was faulty? I bought my laptop just over a month ago. Oh yeah, the camera is indeed BisonCam, NB Pro (version 6.32.0.1). I am also concerned that the camera has no options for taking still pictures i.e. like a camera would normally do. It can only record video on AVI format.

23 Nish Vamadevan August 29, 2007 at 12:22

Okey… that does narrow things down.

I am convinced it is a driver issue with your BisonCam NB pro.

Have you checked your manufacturer for the latest driver?

If not, My recommendation is to backup the current driver and go to ASUS support website and get their BisonCam driver… I know its a long shot, but it might do the trick.

BisonCam software should have an option to take still pictures, or it might be assigned to an F key… Depending on the laptop.

I tried installing a cam driver I got from the NEO website. It was not labelled for the specific laptop model I have but I tried anyway. My laptop crashed three times whenever I tried to open the webcam. I uninstalled and re installed again. The last re-installation was I think okay because I was already able to open the camera without crashing the computer. I tried it on Yahoo! Messenger, and the output was already normal. One problem still remains though, there are no options for taking still pictures. Anyway, I am happier now that the output orientation is not upside down. So, thanks for the suggestions :D

Don’t you have any Icon on My Computer? Check that out, That will open up your cam software and You might be able to take still pictures on it…

I will keep a look out for you :)

Hey Nish,
I uninstalled the windows update driver, installed the driver you originally recommended and then applied the .reg file… I accidentally saved and applied the .reg code as an ANSI file (but after reading the windows site, i believe i revered this by typing a – in front of the 3 reg key’s)… then i saved it as a .reg unicode file and applied it… I have an Asus s96j and the camera light is green but the camera itself is just a black screen.. under both bisconcam application (the device is bisoncam) and under AIM and YAHOO messengers… any ideas on where to go from here? 3 hours of tinkering is leaving me utterly frustrated… thanks

Hello Nish

i have read all the comments on this page but nothing seems to work for me. Im using BisonCam NB pro with vista, it worked perfect in XP. I have tried downloading the driver you suggested and apply the reg file, but seems like it wont convert, my device manager still lists the driver version as: 2.6.0.62 the onw that windows update installs…. Device manager doesent say there is anything wrong with the driver, there is no yellow question mark… seems to me that the problem for me is that i have no way of accesing the bisoncam software, no shortcut on the desktop :(

hope you can help me with this problem, i know this post of yours is kinda old, but im in serious need of help:P

Neil A, I do not know what the NEO website it, You can find the driver on the post above.

Juan, I think its the registry, What I would suggest is use my .reg file from the post. It is a common problem if you mess up the registry file…

Kiran, I suggest you uninstall the software and reinstall it again.

Also, I have uploaded the .reg file on the post, so you just have to download it and apply it. Also, Follow the instructions very carefully!

Daniel, The file is located at the top of the post.

Hi,

I finally managed to get the Bison Cam working with the above instructions but… The image is a bit blurry and black/white, in XP image was sharp and in colour. Any ideas to correct this ?

37 Nish Vamadevan October 15, 2007 at 15:06

Juha, You can either set the brightness of the cam via the Camera Software or via the third party software setting for webcam (i.e. MSN Messenger)

38 juha October 16, 2007 at 08:43

Hello Nish,

Thanks for the quick reply. Perhaps I was unclear, the image has no colour information. As if the camera wouldn´t provide RGB-image at all (image looks like an infra-red image, if you know what I mean). I think the problem lies in the registry settings, the problem is I don´t know which values to change and to which direction. Third party software can´t correct the image. Do you have any ideas ?

39 Nish Vamadevan October 16, 2007 at 13:15

I want you to try and reinstall the whole thing…

I think the problem is either with the registry files or there might have been a file corrupted when you were installing the software…

My recommendation is to reinstall the whole thing… and this time, use the registry file I provided on the post.

Hey,

Unfortunately I missed the bit about the reboot requirement and I applied the registry changes prior to the reboot and then rebooted. I believe that is the reason why my camera isn’t working.

I guess I’d have to undo the registry changes and start afresh, but how do I do that?

Best Regards,
Edric.

Hi All,

I have a Durabook (13Y) with the same camera (Bison NB Pro), I tried about every driver I could find on the web (including the one so kindly presented to us by Microsoft) and non of them worked. I also tried Nishes driver, and registry changes (after rebooting). When I swith on the camera (by launching BisonCam app) I get the little green light that switches on and a grey screen. Nothing else.

Anybody any ideas?

Best regards,

Filip

If you have BisonCam, The driver on this post should work for you… I want you to uninstall whatever you installed, then reinstall the the driver on this page. Also, I recommend you download the .reg file from this page and use it, rather than creating your own .reg file.

By looking at the symptom, I recon it is something to do with the .reg file, It is a common issue and thus I uploaded the .reg file to eradicate this green screen issue. Hope it helps. -nv
