Live Messenger – “Show what I’m listening to” Doesn’t work

by Nish Vamadevan on 07/10/2007 · 30 comments

Windows Live Messenger sometimes doesn’t show the music you play on Windows Media Player even though you set it to show.

The work around is the following…

Open up Windows Media Player, and go to Tools => Options (You might need to hit the ALT key to see the hidden menu)

Click the Plug-ins tab, then on the Category Column, Click on Background and make sure Windows Live Messenger Music Plug-in is ticked. If not, tick it and Apply then OK.

See the following screenshot for more info…

Now you should be able to Show what you play on Windows Media Player.

If the plugin is not there, choose add and browse to the psmsong.14.0.8050.1202.dll file or the version starting with PSMSONG and add it. Will be located in the messenger program files folder. It will show unknown plugin, this dissappear when you go back to it. But you can show the songs your listening too now.

I had to do this as MS says 2003 Server is not supported, but I got Windows Live Messenger, Photo Gallery and Live writer to all run perfectly on my 2003 server operating system. I use this as my workstation (member server) due to the amount of memory and raid system, much faster than XP. And in no way will I go to Vista. lol
