Google Android Mobile Operating System is going to be one of the centrepieces of the 2008 GSMA Mobile World Congress in Barcelona along with Google’s own handset called the Gphone.

Android is a software stack for mobile devices that includes an operating system, middleware and key applications. It is going to be free of charge and will ship with a set of core applications including an email client, SMS program, calendar, maps, browser, contacts, and others.

All applications are written using the Java programming language so I think it will be as good as a Windows Mobile device but running on a Linux Based Operating System. To promote Android, Google has introduced the Android Developer Challenge, which will provide $10 million in awards, so at least it is going to attract some Developers; even if it isin’t for the money, I think it is definitly going to attract some Linux Developers especially from Sourceforge…

I think Google’s concept is right, but I also think they have a long way to go to catch up Microsoft’s Windows Mobile Operating System because it is already established and the third party developers have been producing add-on software for a number of years.

In my opinion, unlike Windows Mobile, Google’s Android Operating System has a far better 3D support so the device needs to support to make the most of the Operating System. I think this feature is going to make Apple worried because I think this is going to be the real iPhone killer.
